This 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the entry into operation of the reservoir of Belesar. It is the largest hydraulic construction in Galicia, with a capacity of 654 hm3 and a tail of 50 km.

The construction of the dam needed flood nearly 2,000 hectares of fertile land and disappearance under the waters of Portomarín village, which was rebuilt near its former location. The reservoir touches the municipalities of Portomarín, Taboada, Paradela, O Saviñao and Chantada.

Accredited Power: 313.7 MW

Each year produces 732GWh hydropower.

The dam has a vault with two mounting gravity. It's work of engineer Luciano Yordi of Carricarte, although the building of the power plant control is work by architect Juan Castanon de Mena. The reservoir was created to supply a hydroelectric plant operated at the time by Fenosa and today by the company Gas Natural.
